Yesterday whilst having a bit of after school fun with the boys I took them to our local McDonalds for an ice cream and a play. We happened to sit next to three young people who, after hearing (ok so I was eavesdropping) their conversation I realized they were fellow believers in Christ. I always love listening to conversations of other believers as I often wonder how I must sound when I talk about church life and God etc. Well the other thing I discovered about this trio was that one I them was a Pastor at their church. He was telling a funny story how someone who had been trying to get on to him had met him and didn't believe he was the youth pastor. After a while I too the boys for a play in the playground a little further away but I could still hear them talking. At one point Asher hd stopped plying and was coming to talk to me and he over heard them talking and one of them say "Oh my God!" he immediately looked at me and said "Mum, those guys over there aren't talking very good!". He was right and I was sad to see that the one who had spoken it was the one who should really have known better, the Pastor! I don't want to sound like I am judging him for what he said but I was in shock a little by the way He used God's name.
You see, in our house that phrase is not allowed as we believe that the Bible is clear that we are not to use the Lord's name in vain. In fact when looking at the way The Message bible puts it, it is clear as day. "No using the name of God, your God, in curses or silly banter; God won't put up with the irreverent use of his name. (Exodus 20:7 MSG)". It is one of the things that both Brad and I agree on and Asher has found out that quickly that it is NEVER ok to say this. I know of a lot of Christians who do say this phrase and think nothing of it but it really bothers me. Maybe they dont know they say it. Or maybe they don't realise it's wrong and to them it's just words I grew up being taught that it's not ok and so I have held firm to that now as a parent. What do you think? Is it a big deal or do you think I'm being silly? Either way I'm still sticking to not saying it and teaching my boys the same but I do want to know how others feel about this.

I agree with you. It was always a big "no" word in our house too. On occasion I have caught myself saying it (I guess when you hear it everywhere it's easy to join in), and regretted it. Hopefully this pastor was in the same boat!
Good on Asher for knowing it's bad!
